DO WE DREAM UNDER THE SAME SKY / FEATURES ARTISTS’ RECIPES / ART BASEL

We are very glad that the publication “Artists’ Recipes” will be featured at Rirkrit Tiravanija’s installation ”DO WE DREAM UNDER THE SAME SKY” at Art Basel this June.

Please join us for the talk at Art Basel on Saturday, June 20, 2pm at Messeplatz.

The installation will function as a platform to further develop the artists' ongoing 'the land' project in form of a series of mini-symposia hosted by Hans Ulrich Obrist on themes and issues relating to the project.

Public Days: Thursday, June 18, 2015, 11am to 7pm Friday, June 19, 2015, 11am to 7pm Saturday, June 20, 2015, 11am to 7pm Sunday, June 21, 2015, 11am to 7pm

For the duration of Art Basel, 'DO WE DREAM UNDER THE SAME SKY' by conceptual artist Rirkrit Tiravanija, German architects Nikolaus Hirsch/Michel Müller and Finnish chef Antto Melasniemi will be installed on Messeplatz in Basel. The new work will be an extension of Rirkrit Tiravanija's and Thai artist Kamin Lertchaiprasert's project 'the land', a self-sustaining artistic community near Chiang Mai in Thailand that engages with the idea of an artistic utopia, presenting an ecological and sustainable model for future artistic practice. Including a herbal garden, kitchen, communal dining and meeting area, the project will involve collaborations with engineers Bollinger + Grohmann and students from the Institute of Art of the FHNW Academy of Art and Design in Basel and the Städelschule in Frankfurt to activate the work during the fair.

'DO WE DREAM UNDER THE SAME SKY' can be seen and experienced as a visually striking large-scale work at the entrance to the fair and as a platform for communication. The installation invites the audience to enter a sphere of recovery and community amidst the excitement of the art fair. Creating a place of hospitality, visitors can engage through the activities on offer, such as the drinking of herbal tea plucked fresh from the on-site garden, the preparation and eating of food. The food will be rooted in Thai tradition and will be available with no fixed schedule, menu or price list: compensation is self- determined, by self-serving, serving others, donations or even participating in the cooking or washing up.

The activities and events will be run in close collaboration with students from Basel and Frankfurt, who will be working alongside Tiravanija and Melasniemi running the kitchen, preparing food and organizing additional events. Both schools, Städelschule in Frankfurt and the FHNW Academy of Art and Design in Basel, have a cooking tradition with students being experienced in running experimental kitchens and testing new concepts of hospitality.

The installation will consist of a modular bamboo and steel structure designed by Nikolaus Hirsch and Michel Müller within which the various themes of the project will be played out. Developed and executed in collaboration with Finnish chef Antto Melasniemi, the program will explore an ecological cycle beginning with the growing of herbs and continuing on to their use in the production of tea and culinary creations. Based on the idea of self-sufficiency, 'DO WE DREAM UNDER THE SAME SKY' will employ various alternative energy models including a solar kitchen.

CHARITY AUCTION | ARTISTS‘ RECIPES

Press release: “Artists’ Recipes – The Original”

“Artists’ Recipes” – an art cooking project with recipes and images by more than 80 international artists is going to auctioned for a good cause.

Basel, November 10th 2015 – Swiss artist duo Admir Jahic and Comelius Roethlisberger takes the next step in their unique book project.  The artists’ originals will now be bound into a one-off book which will be put up for bidding in a charity auction November 20th at von Bartha Gallery Basel. The book has over 80 contemporary artists – including Marina Abramovic and Olafur Eliasson – revealing their favourite recipes. Along with the recipes, the book contains drawings, collages and photographs by the participating artists.

It was their love and passion for cooking, for art and other artists which inspired artist duo Jahic/Roethlisberger to release “Artists’ Recipes” last summer during Art Basel 46. “We’re proud that we managed to get such renowned artists involved. This book is a collection of recipes but at the same time it shows a personal, perhaps less familiar side to the artists,” says Comenius Roethlisberger.

Those artists include Marina Abramovic, Erwin Wurm, Fiona Banner, Olafur Eliasson, Ryan Gander, Hermann Nitsch, Anish Kapoor and many more. Over 352 pages, their contributions appear alongside drawings, col- lages and photographs. Lovers of culinary and visual arts alike are well catered for: along with an aphrodisiacal offering from Marina Abramovic, for example, Tobias Rehberger reveals his favourite dish, “Leipziger Allerlei”. Each recipe is unique and captures something of the artist’s personality.

The publication was presented by Jahic/Roethlisberger at Rirkrit Tiravanija’s installation „Do we dream un- der the same sky“ at Art Basel 46. “Artists’ Recipes” was also presented at the art book fair “I Never Read – Art Book Fair Basel”.

The artists’ originals will be bound into a one-off book which will be put up for bidding in a charity auction on November 20th at von Bartha Gallery Basel. All the proceeds from the auction will benefit a charity organisation called Viva con Agua Schweiz which is campaigning for clean drinking water worldwide.

“Artists’ Recipes” is available online www.bolo-publishing.ch and at museumsshops like Fondation Beyeler, Schaulager and Kunsthalle Basel.

COMMENTS ON “ARTISTS’ RECIPES” FROM PARTICIPATING ARTISTS:

OLAFUR ELIASSON: "Cooking, like art, is both reactive and creative - it is about being in flux, navigating and trusting our senses and then connecting and transforming."

RYAN GANDER: “Liam Gillick once said 'in contemporary art nothing exists in isolation’.... i like that idea, a world where the position of authorship, ownership and the worth of the idea is always shifting. It’s the accumulation of things through a creative life that holds the true means of production the food we make, the drink we invent, the clothes we wear, the songs we sing, hierarchies and job titles aren't important here, only whether it’s interesting or not... A toast: to the most creative life we’ve ever lived, and to living beyond our means. cheers."

SECOND EDITION 2016

“ARTISTS’ RECIPES”, the artists’ cookbook with recipes and illustrations by 81 international artists, follows up an outstanding launch with a second edition. The book contains contributions from such artists as Marina Abramovic, Olafur Eliasson, Ryan Gander, Erwin Wurm, Anish Kapoor handed in their favorite recipes. “Artists’ Recipes” is more than a collection of recipes, it combines cooking with art: The book shows in addition to the recipes also drawings, collages and photographs of the participating artist.

Along with regular bookshops, “Artists’ Recipes” is also available in museums such as the Fondation Beyeler, Schaulager Basel, the Tinguely Museum and most recently the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

After Swiss artist duo Admir Jahic & Comenius Roethlisberger launched the artists’ cookbook during last year’s Art Basel, the second edition of the publication is now on sale.

The artists’ originals which served as the basis for the book were sold in a charity auction in Basel’s von Bartha gallery. The proceeds of over 35,000 Swiss francs were donated to the organisation “Viva con Agua Schweiz”. The money was used for a water project in Nepal carried out in cooperation with the Swiss aid organisation Helvetas.
